Compliance Strategies

Congress amended the U.S. Rehabilitation Act in 1998 to require Federal agencies to make their electronic information accessible to people with disabilities. Section 508 was enacted to make new opportunities available to the disabled and allow them to harness the incredible power of the internet. Any organization that is serving the public is required by federal law to follow the 508 standards and make their website accessible to the disabled. In addition to Section 508 are the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which help developers make web content accessible to everyone. Following these guidelines will ensure that your website is accessible to people with all types of visual impairments including cataracts, color blindness, low vision, or even blindness. It will also help people with cognitive disabilities who have trouble viewing content that is in a multiple column format. For more information on Section 508 and WCAG view our resources page.

Although it is required by law to follow these development guidelines, only 2% of websites are compliant. How do you know if you meet all of these requirements? Accessible Media Group can help your organization develop a comprehensive validation process that is compliant with all government laws and regulations.

Benefits of Compliance

  • Accessiblity by separating the coding for content from the coding for presentation. Websites that separate content from presentation become accessible to disabled people using assistive software.
  • Interoperability by conforming to markup standards. This will help your website content easily integrate into many other applications.
  • Usability by eliminating uneccessary content and code mark-up and making content easier to navigate.
